Artist in Residency: VCCA / Virginia

Life is full of surprises. So during my one-month stay (September 2023) in Virginia, it also held unexpected experiences in store for me and many things turned out differently than expected. My trip to America to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) tells a story of escape, unfolding, connection, loss and joy.

The story begins a week before my arrival at the VCCA, during my time in Washington DC. The encounters, conversations, experiences and impressions I enjoyed there have left a deep mark. I arrived in Virginia somewhat distracted, which made it difficult for me to realize my planned project idea. But when I allowed myself to rethink my original plan and break out of the structures I had previously laid out, the absentmindedness I experienced at the beginning turned into inspiration for new works. The conversations I had with people and other artists, the wisdom we exchanged, the deep connections we made and all the emotions that arose within me turned into colors, shapes, lines and manifested on paper and canvas.

While at the beginning of this year (2023) I was mainly focused on the connection to oneself, the experiences and impressions from my time in America inspired me to explore the connection to other people and my environment more and more. Building on this, three series of works emerged during my residency at the VCCA:

Work series „Looking up at the sky“

“It’s all a great mystery… Look up at the sky and you’ll see how everything changes.”
The Little Prince

Work series „Connected touch“

Seeking the element of connection,
following the breath,
moving together through space;

in response to gravity, momentum and inertia;

creating transcendence;

Work series “Life is full of surprises”

„It is what it is, says love. What it is, asks the mind“
